Tribes in Black & White
Ansel Adams wrote, "Our lives at times seem a study in contrast....love & hate, birth & death, right & wrong...everything seen in absolutes of black and white. Too often we are not aware that it is the shades of grey that add depth and meaning to the starkness of those extremes." Photographing in black and white means focusing on the basics - tones of grey, quality of light, contrast, composition and texture. All though these basics are important to the impact of a color photograph as well, they are the very essence of photographing in black and white. Thinking and seeing in shades of grey allows a photographer to see the subjects in their purest form.
