Namibia_2
Namibia, a country in southwest Africa, is distinguished by the Atlantic Coast on the west with red sand dunes of the Namib Desert backing up to the shoreline. The dry lands of Namibia have been inhabited since prehistoric times by the San (Bushmen), Damara and Nama peoples. The 14th century brought the immigrating Bantu from central Africa. In 1884, Namibia became a colony of Germany until the Herero and the Namaqua took up arms against brutal German colonialism from 1904 to 1907 resulting in the “first genocide of the 20th century”. World War I finally deposed German colonial administration and South Africa imposed a mandate bringing, what is today Namibia, under its government rule. Finally in June 1968, Namibia was proclaimed independent and colorful remnants of German colonialism are still seen throughout southern Namibia. One such example is the deserted ghost town of Kolmanskop where the desert sand has invaded every room of this abandoned town instead of peopled governments.
Being situated between the Namib and the Kalahari deserts, Namibia has the least rainfall of any country in sub-saharan Africa. It is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. With its colorful history, empty and wild landscapes, vast desert with giant red sand dunes, desert-adapted wildlife, various tribes and clear skies devoid of light pollution, Namibia is one of the most hauntingly beautiful countries in the world.
