Wildlife in Kenya is prolific especially in the Maasai Mara, and there is nothing in this world that compares to the Great Migration. But Kenya is more than just the Mara. The more arid northern reserves like Samburu and Buffalo Springs, support special species endemic to that area: Beisu oryx, Lesser kudu, Guenther’s did-dik, Somalia ostrich and the unique long-necked gerenuk. Samburu is also home to the critically endangered Grevy’s zebra which is the world’s largest wild equid. It is far more narrowly striped than the widespread plains zebra of the Mara and has other characteristics, like larger ears. The endangered reticulated giraffe with its striking geometric patterns also resides in Samburu.
Moving further south towards the border of Tanzania is Amboseli National Park. It is synonymous with two things: the majestic herds of elephants and incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is known by photographers for being the best place in the world to get close to free-ranging wild elephants. The Amboseli elephants are recorded to be amongst the biggest elephants in Africa with the largest tusks. It is here that you will have a chance to see these massive yet gentle creatures feeding and gathering in front of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Kenya’s tremendous biodiversity includes 25,000 different animal species. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania. The Great Rift Valley bisects the central highlands, one of the richest agricultural regions in all of Africa. Kenya is diverse, it is full of surprises and there are so many more places to visit than the ones mentioned here. But if you want to breathe in wild Africa, come to Kenya.
