Ethiopia (New_2023)
Ethiopia, located in the "horn of Africa", is Africa's oldest independent country that managed to stay free from colonial control. It is unique from other African countries in many ways: their calendar goes by 13 months a year, their time schedule is different than the rest of the world in that sunrise starts the day at 1:00am and sunset ends the day at 12pm. Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia! The story goes that a goat herder noticed that his goats had a fondness for the fruits of coffee bushes and as a result, coffee was discovered. Ethiopia, not Jamaica is also the birthplace of the Rastafarian movement!
In northern Ethiopia, Lalibela, a 13th Century "New Jerusalem" has 13 medieval solid rock hewn monolithic cave churches drawing coptic Ethiopian Christian pilgrims. The Simien Mountains and the Bale Mountains are home to wildlife such as Gelada baboons and Ethiopian wolves.
In the south of Ethiopia, the Omo Valley is home to eight very different and unique tribes who have maintained their cultural practices and tribal traditions in a world where such traditions are in the process of vanishing.
